So, What is SEO
Search engine optimisation is simply the art of making your web-site or individual web-pages more easily found by search engines such as Google, Yahoo! and MSN. These 3 are without doubt the most important 3 search engines at the moment.
How people Search
Much research has been done which tells us that most people don't look further than the first page of results when doing a search engine query. If this is true, then we must be doing everything possible to make sure that we appear on the first page when people type keywords that match our product range.
Votes of Confidence
All Search Engines consider a link to another page as a vote of confidence for the page they are linking to. This means when we create reciprocal links, we are offering each other (in the eyes of the search engines) a vote of confidence for each others pages. The search engines attribute a lot of importance to this when they rank you for a 'searched term'.
Anchor Text
Probably the most important thing about linking, is the text that you use to create the link (called anchor text). In the email I sent to you, I specified my Anchor Text as 'portable outdoor lighting fixtures', why? Think about it, if a user searches for 'outdoor lighting' on Google, and that text also appears in the anchor text linking your site to mine, then Google (and other engines) consider this text to be highly relevant to what the user is searching for, and therefor gives a higher ranking to the linked site.
Page Rank (PR) is important
The more important your site is, the more importance you offer to the site you are exchanging links with. Why am I telling you this? Well, I want my site to have a high importance, which means I want your site to have a high importance. How do you measure the importance of your web-site? Well, Google has a tool called the Google Toolbar which shows you something called a Page Rank (PR). Once you've installed it, you simply go to your web-site, and in the tool bar at the top, it will tell you your PR which could be from 0 to 10 (10 is more important).
